Depending on why it is pinched, for example if it is a hernaited disc, there is little you can do. I have a pinched nerve also in my back. My leg and foot get cold and numb on me. I can't sleep at night as my back hurts, I have arthritis in my hips, I have tendonitis in my shoulder and acid reflux makes my stomach hurt to lie on it. So I don't sleep well at night. You can take pain meds and just do your best. But one thing that does help is to put pillows underneath my upper thighs to help keep my back off the bed surface. Not every single remedy will work 100% of the time. It depends on air pressure, humidity, temps ect.
The most frequently recommended treatment for pinched nerve is rest for the affected area. Corticosteroids help alleviate pain. In some cases, surgery is recommended. Physical therapy may be recommended, and splints or collars may be used.
Sometimes heat will help. I use a heating pad under my back. I've also heard that Activon is really good stuff. I haven't tried it yet though.
But maybe you could try Ben Gay or Icy Hot. Those may help.

OK, here's the deal:
You have a recurring problem that is getting worse. It is now time for you to take control of the situation, invest in your health, and kick this out of your life.
First, we need to get the current episode under control. Your physical therapist can help with techniques to minimize your current pain. Once that is under better control, then the PT can help with exercise, and modification of your workplace (if needed) to keep these episodes at a minimum.
These types of problems, left to themselves, generally go from bad to worse. Now, you have episodes 1 or 2 times a year, and they last (let's say) less than a week. In 10 years, you may be having 8 or 10 episodes a year that least 2 weeks apiece and are so intense you can't work. When is the time to intervene and stop the downward spiral? RIGHT NOW.
Go to APTA.org, click on "Find a PT", and search your home area.
Good luck.

my husband gets this in his neck also. He goes to the doctor and that is the only thing that helps. Sometimes they give him a shot I think its coritisone. he also gets muscle relaxers and pain pills. He is usually better in 3 or 4 days. He just wakes up one morning and it hurts. His doctor says that he dosen't know what causes it.

go to a chiropractor and then when you get home, warm a wet dish towel inside a plastic bag, in the microwave for about 30 seconds, lay another towel on your shoulder and then put the bag on top...wet heat is what you "made" and it is wonderful for sore muscles
