Martin Luther King, Jr, by a wide margin.
He led a movement which radically changed many things, and was killed for speaking out against war and economic injustice.

A patriot is someone who wants their nation to be the best it can possibly be, and fights to correct its wrongs -- in that sense, Dr. King was the most patriotic man this country has ever seen.

Unlike most of the answers, I'm guessing that you mean BRITISH citizen, right? You know, I simply cannot think of anyone who can be held up as an example to us all! So I will follow with the rest of the answers and go for a world figure, which would habve to be Nelson Mandela. A man who had every right to be bitter and angry about the way he was treated, but realised that being that way would serve no purpose, and would in fact be bad for his country and people. He is the man of the century, and there can be no other choice.

Ralph Nader, the bastard. He has done more good and more harm than any non-elected, non=political, non-wealthy person in the history of the world.
It is true that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. It is also true that no good deed goes unpunished. It is also true that, were more of us like Ralph Nader, this would be a much better place.
But we aren't and it isn't.
Still, my answer is "Ralph". What do I win?
