is there a certain amount of time you have to work at a place before they will give you maternity leave?

my friend is 6 months pregnant and trying to leave her abusive husband. she is unemployed. she has no money and wants to get a job. can you apply for a job.. knowing you are going to need to take maternity leave soon?

In the US, they are not legally obligated to give you leave if you are there less than 6 months.

In canada you get maternity leave based on how many hours you have worked in the last year. Your employer doesn't give you maternity leave, the government does. So even if you have four different jobs, if you have enough hours in, you get maternity.


I am single and didn't get maternity with my first one. i got subisdized houseing. Ran a day home. Also she can do people's laundry and that kind of stuff from her home. there is always welfare if she needs to leave an abusive guy and food bank...as a last resort. But I did fine wiht a day home ran from my home on subized housing

she might be lucky, and find a place that will hire her. my sis in law lucked out like that. If her husband is abusive though, she may need to find a friend or shelter she can stay at first, then get aid through wic and other programs, and then worry about a job. There was a program my sis in law also found for a friend who was in need where she got a voucher for an apartment through a welfare program. check into what is available.

Nope...she is authorized to take 12 weeks parental leave (w/o pay...unless she has enough sick leave accrude) per the Family and Medical Leave Act.

no..and the sad thing is they wont let you collect unemployment either...tell her to go to wic ..they will help her with food and some people even get a check a month..so you never know...good luck to her..

depending on what state you live in........in calif. you can file for state disability for 6 months
