Is it in their genetic make-up?

Personally, I stopped trying to figure that one out long ago. I simply put BOTH the seat and the cover down. This way, she has to open one to get to the other whereas I can open both together.

If they grew up with their own toilet, or in a household where the toilet seat was down, they were secure in the knowledge that that seat was down, waiting to receive their bottom. With the seat up, the rim seems colder, and it's definitely bigger, and instead of landing safely and securely, they feel like they are falling into a cold, wet, unsanitary pit. It's no fun at all! Especially in the middle of the night!

How can guys live with the seat up? Do they just automatically check to see if it's up before sitting?

But really, to save fights, it's best to put the seat down AND close the lid. No strange stuff gets dropped in the toilet by accident, animals can't drink out of it, and it's better for your money Feng Shui, apparently. And that way, everyone has to work before they sit and after they are done. More fair.

Of course, you could always stake out your own bathrooms . . . .

Guys usually miss the toilet. If the seat is up then we are confronted by their drips over the bowl rim and are compelled to wipe it and then we have to touch the seat to put it down. I say leave something the same as you found it. If the seat is down, put it back down when you've finished. It is how a toilet is meant to be .. I've never been to a plumbing shop and seen a toilet on display with the seat up or are the pictured with the seat up in decorating magazines!!!

Not genetic. There is nothing worse than getting up in th middle of the night and falling in because a man forgot to put the seat down!! How difficult is it to flip a seat down? It takes a milisecond

Because if they sit down in the dark and they didn't check the status of the toilet seat first (common if they just woke up to pee and planned on going right back to bed), they fall in and it is rather hard to get back out without help. I watched my Mom do it when I was about 4 and laughed for days. I also could not sit down for days so be careful if this ever becomes your fault, Guys.

Because they're too lazy to check and make sure the toilet seat's down before sitting down. It's like saying "I sit down at the kitchen table to eat every night, and if my seat isn't where I want it, I'm going to blame someone else when I fall on my butt, because I didn't look first!" If you don't want to fall in the toilet, I guess it's important enough to check first and make sure the seat's down, isn't it? You don't walk up to the toilet backwards do you? You HAVE to face it at one point or another...do you not NOTICE that the seat's up? You live in a man's house, it will be up! For all those women who decide that "My man will put the seat down, or he won't *snap snap snap* HAVE me around no more!": Good on you! I bet you don't cook or clean either, do you? Good riddance! You'll spend TWO HOURS looking at your make-up in the mirror, and even do so in the car, while driving, endangering lives left and right, but you gripe because you refuse to take 2 seconds and say "Oh....the toilet seat's up, I'll put it down....because it's not so hard to do after all!"

Nope - ever fallen into the cold toilet water after getting out of the nice warm bed?

I've known guys who've forgotten to put the seat down and ended up in the "drink" themselves. Ice cold water on your - ahem - makes a quick message and a lesson rapidly learned.

Okay fellows, imagine this.
You wake up in the middle of the night because you have to pee
You walk to the bathroom half asleep
You sit down to do your business
But because the seat was left up you FALL IN!
Can you see how we might get a little upset?

The late night splsh-down is a rude way to be jarred into complete wakefulness when all you wanted to do was pee.
