Yes, it's weird and often the terms are misused. technically a "motor" is something that is electrically run or driven or what's the word, well let me rephrase, it runs on electricity. Things like a blender, a fan, etc. The reason it is operating is by using electrical energy. An engine is something that is powered, usually, by internal combustion of some sort of fuel.
So,
cars - engines
motorcycles - engines
ships - engines
But, yes, Detroit is the "Motor City"
and electric shaver - motor.
The problem is that an engine, in order to combust the fuel, uses a spark plug which is powered by a motor, the alternator [through distributor to the spark plug wire to the plug] which is being spun by the fan belt which is being moved by the turning of the engine.
Where the combustion of the fuel is happening is the engine
Where the electricity is being generated is the motor.
Just thought of something, since combustion means a chemical process of burning, I guess that nuclear powered ships like carriers and some submarines would have motors to turn the screws since they don't combust anything to generate power.
