An employment agency booked me on to a first aid course and the £110 would be deducted from my first 2 weeks wages. The job did not materialise and I have sent a cheque for £10 to the company with a written promise to pay the rest @ £10 per month (I am unemployed on £54 per week dole) The cheque has been sent back to me with a demand that I pay in full. What can I do now?

Send them the £10.00 again explaining you cannot pay in full. If this gets returned again they cannot do a thing. Well technically they can take you to court but with an income of £54pw they would get a lot less than £10.00pm - believe me!

Don't worry x

First of all you need to check that you signed a contract accepting responsibility for the £110. If you did not then you do not have a problem.

If you did sign a contract, Send them a financial statement showing your income and outgoings and make your offer again.

If they refuse, the worst they can do is take you to court and the court will probably accept the offer, but they will not be happy with the employer for refusing your reasonable offer. So they will not be awarded costs making it not worth the effort. Keep the letter they have sent you and the returned cheque.

The only problem is that if they do you will have a ccj on your credit file.

Hope this helps Good Luck

First of all you have shown willing to make payments, that is a fair and decent offer, write to them and tell them that you are sorry that they would not accept your payment plan and you will pay them in full when you have saved enough money to pay them in full as requested. Employment agency's are renowned money grabbing blood sucker's, they make their living out of your hard work, and they make a better living than you, if I knew where you were or how to get in touch with you I would lend you the money myself and I would not care if you only paid me back at a £5er a month, if its not such a hardship to me it shouldn't be such a hardship to them, I am sure they have more cash than I have,

all the best, I wish you luck and hope you find work soon.

Ignor them they are being unreasonably. all they can do is take you to court. and if they do the magistrate would see it that way and possibly award them a couple of pound per week without costs.
Don't be threatened by big business people they have no grip on the realities of living on SS
If you are still worried you can visit a citizens advice centre or a solicitor who will give you advice under the legal aid scheam and write to them on your behalf

You are guaranteed free legal aid as you are on a low income

You should point out that you did this on condition that there was a job at the end of it - suggest they recover it from the employer. Why should you pay it ? They sent you on the course. Just refuse to pay at all.

Make an appointment with your Local Citizens Advice Bureau. They have specialist debt advisors who will negotiate with the Agency on your behalf. Considering your circumstances it is totally impossible for you to pay it in full and your offer of £10 per month is totally reasonable. The CAB will sort it out for you. They don't charge a penny for this service.

ignore it, by law they have to except any offer of repayment if you are unemployed. don't pay them ten a week, offer them two if they try and intimidate you go and see someone at citizens advice and they will tell you the same thing or contact them directly for you .good luck.

If they promised you a job if you gained this qualification and the job did not materialise, then don't pay them anything. Tell them to try to get their money from social services.

The best solution to debt is "just walk away". Leave all those bad things behind you.
