What is the best way/route to drive to San Diego, CA from San Jose, CA?

I never drove down myself and was looking at maps on how to get there. I'm looking for a route with less traffic then LA or maybe the best times to pass LA. I am trying to find a quick way to travel such a long distance in a car.

Some tips and advise would be helpful to.

Unless you want to go east and bypass LA.
You either travel the Interstate 5 or the 101 all the way north.
We have done both and the 101 hugging the coastline (for part of the trip) is more scenic.
There's not a lot of choice really, other than heading more easterly and taking yourself too far off course.
The I5 is outrageously busy but usually keeps moving along.
