Highly depends on what you are after in terms of gameplay. If you like PvP (Player vs Player) then you will want Factions. PvP is a major focus in it and is designed to reach you to level 20 as quickly as possible so you can make your build.
The first one. (Prophecies) is the slowest to level on and has a very long story. Mainly focused on PvM (Player vs Monster. Or PvE (environment) however you want to say it). Nightfall is also focused on the story and PvM but it has a bit quicker leveling system then Prophecies.
So if you want PvP, go Factions. Slow PvE, go Prophecies. Moderate PvE, go Nightfall. In the end its pretty nice to have all three because each has something they can bring to the table in terms of content. Plus you can get them in any order and just add the new ones as you get.
Note: DON'T get Factions if your looking for PvE. Seriously. When I was level 11 and surrounded by level 24 monsters I was lost. And later found out your supposed to get to level 20 while still on the "tutorial island". Not fun.

I own all 3 of them and their all great. Guild wars original was a long game and its challenging. It only has the 5 basic professions. Guild wars factions is short but it opens alot of ideas for guilds like the faction stuff and so it isnt always short. Nightfall is the newest and it allows you to have heros which are personal henchmen. They are good but not needed. It is fun but i havn't made it too far in it. It takes alot to get farther which sometimes ruins the fun but that is a personal oppinion. Alot of people like nightfall the best. Guild wars original also called prophacies also has some good areas to earn money which is not easy to get at least for me. You have to farm a area and then zone back and do it again. Guild wars is a great mmorpg and i enjoy it alot even tho im moving on to wow or world of warcraft which somepeople say is alot better.

I have all three editions. I liked the last edition best, "Nightfall". You can enlist three heroes to follow you,and level up with you, rather than rely on the "henchies" in town, who do not follow you throughout the whole game, or level up with you. You can equip the heroes with upgraded weapons, and even tell them where to go and let them fight for you, while you stand back and watch, or you can make them stay in one place to defend it while you move on to attack another target. If you are looking for a group of six, and you have three heroes besides yourself, you would only need to find two more people to go with you, although if you couldn't find anyone else, you could always add the "henchies". The first game was very good, but people are always moving on to the latest game, so there may not be as many people playing in the PVE part of the game. If you are looking for PVP action only, it doesn't matter which game you buy, because all the games characters can meet together to fight battles on the Battle Isles. Although there are special arenas specific to each version of the game. You can buy more than one edition, and combine them, so that your characters can move freely between all three editions, if you want. That's what I did. I have eight characters who can go to all three editions. You can even purchase additional characters on the on-line store for 10 dollars each. You get 4 characters per game, if you just buy one game.
"Factions" was the second edition, and "GW" was the first. It's interesting that GW is still popular and still sells for about 35 dollars, and has better graphics than most other games, including WOW, IMO. NF sells for about 49 dollars. GuildWars is the original game, Factions and Nightfall are continuing chapters in the story. Check the box, you may have to have the original before the other two.
