Whenever I hear this (or the cognate question, "what is the question of life?") I recall a statement of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., a philosophical realist who was one of the greatest Americans of the period between the Civil War and the begining of the New Deal (best known as Justice of the Supreme Court). It runs something like this — The end of life is living itself. The only quesstion about life is whether you have enough of it.
