if you use a lower octane than what your manufacturer recommends than you may experience pinging. If you use a higher octane then what is recommended than you may experience a thinner wallet.

If you use a higher octane than the manufacturer recommends, you could be causing the engine to develop carbon deposits. Also unless a manufacturer recommends using a higher octane fuel, the 87 octane is good enough for most vehicles.
