People tend to always name flair players as the best in the world, overlooking more defensive players. Players like Gerrard or Cannavaro are just as important. In terms of all-round ability I'd go with Gerrard. He's a fantastic passer, can shoot, dribble, tackle, lead and most importantly almost single-handedly change a game (see Champions League final). Whilst technically he's not as good as Ronaldo or Ronaldinho his all-round game is as complete as I've ever seen.

C.Ronaldo is scintillating at the moment though.

i gotta comment on this since people have been claiming that c. ronaldo is the best player in the world. i think this is bizarre. ronaldo gives the ball away too often and isn't the best crosser or passer in the world. he's extremely fast and quick with or without the ball, but i don't think he's as creative as any number of other players. it's easy to shut him down since most of his moves are stepovers or only viable when running at opponents. arsenal shut him down this season with tight marking. i'd take scholes, giggs, rooney, and larsson over ronaldo, and that's just from the manchester united squad.

i like ronaldinho, but after a lackluster world cup, i don't think he can be called the greatest player. for my money, the recently retired zidane has not been eclipsed by anyone. i do agree with my fellow posters that fabregas is on his way.

the others i'd consider are essien, gerrard, henry, maybe lampard, all from the premiership. from that list i'd probably choose gerrard since i think he's the only one who can single-handedly will his team to victory, very zidane-like in that respect. consider the liverpool vs. chelsea win a few weeks ago.

the two best in the wprld are ny fellow argentines LIONEL MESSI and JUAN ROMAN RIQUELME. messi has amazing balance ,hes absolutely world class, vision superb, dribbling out of this world, what more can i say ,hes unique will definetly go on to emulate maradona ,hes also gonna win the world cup 4 argentina in 4 yrs time. riquelme is one of the worlds most underated players yet probably the most gifted i have ever seen he can dictate the pace of a game by himself and boss a game all on his own,his technique is the best i have ever seen, passing imaculate, classy skills, control lets not even talk about it, me personally ill take him over zizou and dinho anyday. riquelme is simply the best, its a shame he never played for a top top club in europe , but whenever hes on the field ill miss a bloody MBE from the queen just to watch the unique master play. COMING FROM AN ARSENAL FAN!!!!!!!!!!!

Best Keeper Coupet (Lyon)
Best Defender Canavaro (Real Madrid)
Best Defensive midfield (Essien)
Best Distributing(passing)Midfielder DECO (Barcelona)
Best Attacking Midfielder C.Ronaldo (Man U)
Best Striker Drogba (Chelsae)

It all depends on what style of play one prefers
I personally like Rooney only when he is aggressive which is why I also like Patrick Viera.
