I guess in order to answer the question one should define what they mean by the words THE GREATEST.
If it is a measurement of how a people look after their own .. then sorry .. as nice as many American people are .. America as a Nation seems to fail it's own people miserable ... Poor Health care , people struggling on Minimum wages .. emphasis being placed upon celebrity nothings who contribute little ( mind you in fairness to the USA.. most western nations seem to do the same.
So in that sense the USA is far from the greatest nation on earth.
If greatness is to be measured by might and strength .. well yes america is Very Strong and Mightiful .. So i guess yes American is GREAT.. BUT the Greatest ? I don't know .. i don't know the might and power of Nations Like China ...
If Greatness is measured by the way a people believe in their nation .. if it is measured by their Patriotism .. well again America is Great ... but once again how does it compare to other nations.
If greatness is measured in the way it has influenced other nations .. well again America is great because I believe the influence of American culture has permeated all parts of the world. american music , american colloquialisms, american food , american television , american film and so forth ... THIS may be the definition that does define the USA as the greatest nation on this earth.
But i personally believe it is worrying for anybody from any nation to stand up and say I LIVE IN THE GREATEST NATION IN THE WORLD ... to me it reaks of arrogance and ignorrance as many nations have elements of what makes something Great. Sometimes those that sprout that the most seem to be those that have no idea what may be great in other places.
America is powerful, America is influential, America has beauty ...America has many Great things ( some greatly good and some greatly bad) ... But as for being the Greatest .. I don't think any one nation can claim to be THE GREATEST.

This is a very touchy subject which i'm sure will attract lots of arguing.
when it comes to the greatest nation in the world I say Australia, why? because i live in Australia and i've had a really good life here.
if i lived in Canada or France and had a great life i'd probably say Canada or France.
the USA is one of the countries i'd love to visit, and you can say it's the greatest nation in the world if you want, if you feel that way then you're right.
There is no overall greatest nation in the world, as it would take the unanimous agreement of the entire population of the world to choose, but if you're very happy living in your country I say be as patriotic as you want, it's good to feel happy about the country you live in.
As a definate, i'd say the USA would be one of the greatest countries in the world, and I'd love to meet some nice Americans when i visit in the future and make life long friends

There are many great things about the USA. It's landscape, its history, its effect upon the world. But, the 'greatest'. Hmmm...I think there are too many problems, both at home and abroad, to say that is categorically true.
My bet would be on the Scandinavian countries, particularly Finland, which for years and years now has been chosen by the World Economic Forum as the best country in the world in which to live.
PS I am Irish living in Italy.

Yes, even though others may doubt it by our latest ventures overseas. Our markets and economy is solid. Unemployment is only at around 4.5%, inflation is low. The only negative is that new home sales are the lowest in a decade. We are a Democratic Republic; have most rights and privileges that other countries don't have. The problem is, in my opinion, that most people are too complacent and take things for granted. Citizens like to complain, but a majority of registered voters care to vote. Our military is well-armed, we have 11,500 nuclear warheads, a superlative Navy and Air Force. All we need is wise and judicious leadership in areas of our government in order to meet the true needs of America. We are the greatest nation in the world, also, because we are mostly tolerant of immigrants who infuse their talents and inventive natures and skills into our culture. We are a melting pot, and always will be. Our democracy is our best asset.

Most countries of this world are not as young as we are. It took many centuries for most countries to even make an attempt to become estabished, many are not stable even to this day. But in just a little over 2 centuries, America has grown from a colony to a superpower.
The US Patent office has issued over 6 million patents for American inventions. The world has benefited from many of them like cars, motorcycles, aircraft, space travel, etc. The list is so long as to American contributions to this world, there is no room to list them all.
American boys have saved the world from dictators in two world wars. When Europe and parts of Asia about collapsed, it was the Americans who turned the tides. The world became a safer place to be because of them.
When there is disaster in the world, the Americans give the most money, aid and equipment of any nation in the world. How soon the world forgets that.
America is the world's breadbasket. Many millions owe their very lives to American farmers, who send so many tons of food supplies all over the world annually. Without that food, millions would starve. Medical care could be tossed in as well.
Americans are the most charitable givers. Look at any charitable organization, and you will see the biggest spenders on charity are Americans.
Americans are liberators. So many countries have been freed from dictators and oppression due to American forces coming in and setting them free. And this was done with the utmost criticism from the rest of the world.
So many foreigners have made new lives here. If America is so bad in the eyes of the world, why do millions flock here annually? So many people want to abandon their countries and become Americans. That should speak volumes to the rest of the world.
These are a few, but not all of the reasons.

No! It is the world's biggest consumer of resources, it is the biggest polluter,it is not subject to any environmental protocols or treaties, Americans are introspective and are absolutely clueless about world geography, other nations, cultures. It violates sovereign territories, it is a self appointed big fat bloated global policeman. It reckons it has the monopoly on trade and industry. It destroys lives and brainwashes its people to the extent that very few Americans can perceive that their so called democracy is formulated by a police state to promote its global imperial policies. It is a nation of bigots and hypocrites. USA sucks!

If we were not the worlds biggest polluter, the biggest consumer, and the biggest hypocrite on civil rights we might make the list of great nations. We have the potential.
