666 is the number given to Nero's full name. In the Greek alphabet numbers mean letters and vise versa. Nero is the one who persecuted the Christians. And he was going to go and ethnically purge towns from Christians who used the number 666 for a code to beware and be able to talk about the person without consequences. It is also the number the Bible gives to MAN who is also considered the devil.

That assumption is based on the erroneous belief that the Book of Revelation was originally written in English with Arabic numerals. And yes, it is historic rather than something that is yet to happen. It refers to the 'Number of the Beast,' who was Caesar Nero and his nephew and successor Domitian. Written in Hebrew and Greek these two names add up to '666' when a numeric value is assigned to each letter of their names in the respective languages. This was the author's (of Revelation) way of saying that these men were... Completely imperfect.

I do not consider it evil... using numerology and gematria you can achieve a strong positive summary from this number. The whole of Revelations was encoded to protect a great secret... or to protect a people from a truth that was beyond them...
