A long time ago it was a sign of safety. If any enemy or animal was around to hurt you at night the crickets would stop chirping. As long as you heard crickets you were ok-ie lucky! It just grew outta that.

Sorry but I can't give you a definite answer as to why, but interestingly that is the case in Germany as well as in China and France.
In Germany it is definitely connected to the belief in good spirits that watch over the house and its song is supposed to keep evil influences away, but when I was a child my German granny could not tell me anything more when I asked than that they just were lucky to have around the house.
