From the years 1819 to 1872 the East End changed from a series of small villages around acres of farmland to a grand Victorian suburb. Was there protest? What happened to them?

No, there were no protests. All of Greater London went through this process. The newer suburbs Romford, Hornchurch in the East, Harrow in North West, Croydon in South etc., etc. were all agricultural up until the 1920s/30s. Farmers were usually quite happy to be paid money for their land. Development on agricultural land still goes on today.
