Start with a size 5-6 mm in diameter needle and some cheap, light colored yarn. Getting yarn that is tightly wound and mostly acrylic (or other man-made materials) and a worsted weight... 2-3 mm in diameter... is the easiest to begin with.

The BEST thing would be to have someone who is a knitter teach you how (the basics shouldn't take more than one evening). If that is not possible, use the website http://knittinghelp.com to learn. They have videos on the very basics (starting AKA casting on, knitting, purling, and ending AKA casting off) as well as more advanced techniques when you get to that point. There are also free patterns and a forum if you find you need more help.

Don't expect too much to come of your very first try, but after a short time you should be able to make a simple scarf, or sew together a bunch of "scarves" to make an afghan!

Good luck.. and watch out, it's addicting!

The best place to start is www.knittinghelp.com they have a lot of videos from first starting, to more advanced things. I learned a lot from watching those. http://www.expertvillage.com/search.htm?tag=knitting this is also a really good site, since you don't know much about needles or other things. She shows different needles, different tools, and different types of yarn. Its a great place to check out.
