Any idea what it could be?

Sounds like it needs to be balanced. Sometimes when it's off balance the tub spins out of whack and hits the side making a loud sound. It could either be that the load is unbalanced and needs to be rearranged, or that the machine itself is not balanced. Sometimes the back is lower then that front, etc.

Unbalanced load where there's too much clothes on one side and not enough on the other. The centrifugal forces then pushes the drum to the heavier side as it starts to spin. Hence the knocking noise.
You just have to readjust the washing so all sides have enough wet, soggy clothes...
But if you get a frontloader machine, this will never happen.

Sounds Like the clothes are on one side. Try distributing the clothes evenly. Knocking is caused when the drum hits against the inside of the washer usally due to over loading or uneven loading

that means that u put to many clothes in the machine and its off balance so u can fix that by stoping and pulling all the clothes off the side of the machine and let it start again or the other possibility if it leaks water there a bearing at the bottom of the machine that could be bad. so u might have to buy a new machine. but in my experience u have to many clothes in!

labored home equipment for 2 years... if the noise does not end after the garments are repositioned then evidently like something is the two trapped between the drum and the side wall or the belt may well be off music slightly and does not be observed till the drum is spun at a severe speed. in case you have some one reachable have em examine it out... maximum washers have decrease front panels that is bumped off others would desire to be laid on it particularly is lower back in basic terms and serviced from the backside.

Too many clothes on one side of the washer. You have to lift the lid, stopping the spin cycle, and redistribute the clothes evenly.

They can do that if there is an uneven load or if the machine is unbalanced. If it's unbalanced, there are adjustable legs on the bottom to help you level it if you use a spirit level.
