Where does glycolsis take place in the cell? The krebs cycle ?electron transport ?

Glycolysis takes place in the cytosol. The Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain, take place in the mitochondria.

Some people may have different answers about where glycolysis ends and where the Krebs cycle begins; some people consider the reduction of Pyruvate into Acetyl-CoA, which occurs in the cytosol, a part of Krebs cycle. But I don't. ;)

Glycolysis, which is a sequence of reactions that converts glucose to pyruvate leading to the release of a very small amount of ATP(energy) is carried out in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic respiration)in the cytoplasm of human cells. In plants, some of the glcolysis is carried out in chloroplasts.
The Krebs cycle is carried out with oxygen( aerobic), and will ultimately end in the production of much larger ATP (energy) output thru the degradation of pyruvate.

Glycolysis----------cytosol

Kreb’s cycle-------mitochondria(Matrix)

ETC-----------------mitochondria (inner membrane)



Its very simple…..the carbohydrates in our diet are degraded into smaller and simple units that is glucose. glucose gets oxidized to yield 2 molecules of pyruvate that’s via glycolysis that takes palce in cytosol. You may wonder how glucose enters the cell from circulation….well glucose transporters e.g : GLUT-2 aid in uptake of glucose by cells.
The pyruvate molecule then enters citric acid cycle (Kreb’s cycle) to yield carbon dioxide and water.
ETC or electron transport system takes place in inner membrane of mitochondria….. During oxidative phosphorylation electrons are transferred from NADH or FADH2 — created in glycolysis, fatty acid metabolism and the Krebs cycle — to molecular oxygen, via a series of protein complexes located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. How do these electrons from reducing equivalents like that of NADH and FADH2 move to the inner membrane from matrix: is due to the proton gradient created!!!

Glycolysis takes place in thecytosol,Kreb’s cycle in the mitochondria and also ETC takes place in the mitochondria..
