For a holiday read I always dive into one of the good classics, it adds to the holiday. For example on vacation in Aruba about 10 yrs ago, I read A Farewell To Arms, Its my next read too, I love Hemingway. My vacation in Mexico I read Don Quixote, I guess its the dorkiness in me, but I love the classics!

The Author Daniell Steel. She puts out great books. They are based on real life stories. They come in paperback too. Once you get involved in them you cannot put them down. They are certainly not girly books. She is so interesting. Her books have been made into movies.
They are suspenseful, and you feel like you are living with the characters, and lives of the people.
You MUST TRY IT. You will be so grateful. I just can't explain the way I am so excited about this author. LOOK INTO IT. ASK YOUR FRIENDS OR FAMILY. I AM SURE THAT SOMEONE HAS HEARD OF HER.
SHE IS A GREAT STORYTELLER,THE WAY SHE PUTS THE PLOT TOGETHER, YOU NEVER KNOW HOW IT IS GOING TO END.
Happy reading, on your holiday.

LOL.. sorry but I don't consider thrillers light reading. As for something to read, I really like the story of Helen Keller. She was very fascinating.

Try Tess Gerrisen, Linda Fairstein, Harlan Coben. They all write good thrillers. In my opinion anyway. If you want something a little lighter try Sue Grafton's alphabet series.

I'm a big fan of the Hannibal Lecter series, since you mentioned thrillers. They're by Thomas Harris if you're interested.

If you like "light" thrillers, i've always enjoyed James Patterson or Dean Koontz. They are quick reads and perfect for the beach.

Try the Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay. It is a fictional story in a late medieaval Spain setting. Very human, very moving, very enjoyable.
