I shaved through all my pregnancies. Even when I couldn't see, I still tried. I did it by touch most of the time. A mirror does come in handy too. Unless of course its to see that you did a miserable job on the by touch and feel method mentioned above. ;)
If you are having a vaginal birth you probably won't shave afterward for at least a few weeks, especially if you have tearing in that area. Obviously you can keep the front trimmed down but the rest is going to hurt for a bit.
Having yourself shaved FOR the birth is quite nice though. You have so much blood and everything otherwise, which would tangle in the hair and practically glue you shut. I know, because it did that to me a week after delivery when I hadn't been able to shave! I would hate to imagine during the first day. And I had episiotomies for 3 births and second degree tearing for the last. It probably made the stitching easier and more sanitary.
I also have to add that even at the end I don't get the "could care less" feeling. I want a fairly flawless and memorable experience. My contractions were 5 minutes apart and I still insisted on shaving my LEGS in the shower before leaving home. And at the hospital they didn't want me to use the bathroom right before I started to push. Well, I am just too self concious about things and demanded to do so. And a good thing too because the first thing out wouldn't have been a baby otherwise!
It's just my opinion of course. Best luck with whichever you choose. And congrats!!

when in was pregnant there was a million things i was worried about. a roomful of people looking at your bits and i cried about it and worried about my pubes and everything you can think of.
but really honestly, (coming from from someone very shy) , once your in the birthing room and for the last 3 hours, at 20 minute intervals, you have had some nurses fingers up you checking to see if you are dilated, you give up caring. the pain is so intense and the gas and air make you feel like you are flying, and the pethidine makes you feel completely drunk and very sleepy that your pubes will be the last thing on your mind.
you will just want that baby out of there as soon as possible.
some tips, drink lots of cold water while in labour as you get so hot, have some lip balm on hand (really do this) as my lips were so cracked.
and if you have to be sewn back up, which i had to, just think of something other than the fact that there is small woman on a milking stool with a big spot light and a needle between my legs. just look at the ceiling. it doesn't hurt but you don't wanna see what is happening.
when i was pregnant, no one would be honest with me about child birth and i wish they were. if you have any questions, mail me via my profile.
good luck.

OY! I absolutely have had some incidents of suffering in my life pondering the actual shown truth that childbirth. I count number that because the ten on the a million-10 scale for suffering. It felt to me the picture of the worst, a lot extreme, previous painful menstrual cramp i'd imagine, and that became once earlier than i became once having severe contractions. wish that ideas the questions.

Do whatever you feel like love. With my first it was a rush job so went in with a forrest, with my second i shaved.
If you think about it realistically when you are in labour you couldn't give a monkies about anything and old your dignity goes out the window anyway and it'll be last thing on your mind!
I remember with my first worrying about all the doctors looking at my flu but at end of it whole of my street could have been in there!
Good luck with birth xx

I think shaving not necessary. Dont worry - you can imagine all the different kinds of people that the doctors and midwives see! Just be yourself, have a quick shower as soon as you realise you are in labour. You can shave your legs and bikini line and thats all that is needed (if that)!

I live in Portugal and they shave you in the hospital before giving birth and I was really getting upset about it!!! it's an old fasioned practise and not necessary anymore so I was planning on kicking up a stink about it and telling them not too. But when it came to it I didn't even notice them doing it!!!! you really won't care what they do or think of you, you're just so focused on getting to meet your baby at last :-) good luck @->---

lol, im completely shaved and feel much cleaner that way, i even got my partner to shave me before goin to hospital when my labour started with my 3rd child! i really wouldnt worry, i'm shaved and pierced but the last thing i was worried about was what the midwives would think, i just wanted my lil boy out safely.

I'm guessing that you aren't heavily pregnant yet? Because once you get to a certain point in your pregnancy you can't even see to do up a belt, let alone what your bikini line looks like. Once you can't see it, you will probably stop caring!! You really won't be able to do it yourself after you reach a certain size, unless you are very clever with mirrors and quite brave!
If you do, no one is going to think anything of it.
