How can I free up RAM without it affecting the systems I need to run my computer? I keep getting a message to say that my system is running low on virtual memory.

Hi there

Check that you don't have too many progams running on yopur computer at the same time. You could have a lot of programs starting when your computer does. Check the startup folder in your windows start menu to see what's there. If there are programs you don;t need, right click them with the mouse and select delete from the menu that appears.

Also, check in the options menu of your programs and look for a tick box that says startup automatically or something like that. Make sure that it isn;t ticked if you don't want the programs to start when widnows starts. Doing this will not delete the program, it will simply stop it from starting up every time you start your computer. You will be able to start it yourself when needed.

Hope this helps.

Your pc uses virtual memory as well as RAM, and thats a section of the hard drive. So you need to make space on your hard drive.

- Back up old files to cd or other storage and delete them.
- Run Ccleaner, use the Issues tool then the cleaner to remove temp files.
- Defragment the hard drive from start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmetner, leave the pc while it runs.
Do this once a month, if its not enough then you need to add a second hard drive for storage and get the page file put on there, for some reason it also makes it more efficient and faster.

Without affecting the systems you need to run? You can shut down some applications (but that's not what you want to do), replace them with more memory-efficient ones or buy some more memory.

But I've not seen that message in win2000/winxp... are you running win98 ir win95? If you are, upgrade to win2000 or winxp if your PC meets the needs... their memory handling is better and they will make better use of extra memory.

Virtual Memory is not RAM it's HDD space and that amount of Virtual Memory you have dedicated to use.

The short of it is make sure you have plenty of disk space left. Check the setting in the System Panel.

If you didn't understand that - email me and I'll help.

buy more RAM, what you talking about freeing it up for? if these msgs keep coming up, then you are low on ram and it should increase the amount of space on the hardrive that could be used for virtual ram
