i will assume you are using windows,ok?

to your first question:
by cleaning did you mean getting rid of temporary and unwanted files?

is your os bogged down with unnecessary files?

you can use disk clean up.go to your - start menu - programs - accesories - sytem tools - disk cleanup.
you can specify which files you want deleted.you can even make a cleanup schedule.
you can also download and use a registry cleaner tool.

to your second question:
no,you cannot format your hard drive without losing your os.
first - if you are tryiing to format the hard drive where the os is installed, windows will not let you.
second - if you do it externally, outside windows like from a dos boot, you will lose ALL your files, your os included.it will wipe your hard disk clean.well, not wipe really, because in reality it will "zero-fill" (format) your hard drive.

if your system is that bogged down, why not try saving all your important files to another drive first?
there are many ways to do that - usb external drives,or connecting your hard drive as slave to another drive(master) with windows os.
or burn everything first to an optical medium like a DVD?
then you can re-format your hard drive, but you still have to re-install your os and programs.

one advice - partition your drives, even if you only have one.
depends on the size of your drive, divide it into 30% - 70% partition.

in the 30%,install your os.in the 70% save all your files.
that way whatever happens to your os,you can always re-intsall it without losing all your files.

also very important is always have antivirus and antispyware installed on your pc.

again,...you cannot format your hard drive without losing the os if your os is installed on the drive you are trying to format.

hope this helped.cheers and good luck.

U cant clean out ur pc without cleaning the HDD.The only way to re-format ur HDD is the go to control panal, and select 'administrative tools, then select computer management. A new window will pop up, then select 'disk management on the left colum of the window. there u will be able to view the avaliable drives in ur system. Hmm, to 'clean' your hard drive and start over you really need to format. Anything less leaves tons of old stuff behind, even uninstalling everything. There will be zillions of registry entries (Windows guts), directories, files and dll's left intact.

If you have the Windows CD, boot from it, select New install. Delete the partition. Format the drive and it will continue with the Windows install. All from the Windows CD. It will delete everything from the drive, so insure you have backed up your files to a CD first!
