we bought her a habitrails mini cage and it comes with this gravity fed, mushroom shaped waterbottle that feeds into a trough like thing. She has had it for about 6 months but just the past two weeks she keeps knocking it over. The metal bars on the cage are super tiny so we decided to buy her a conventional waterbottle to hang on the outside but had to bend the bars to fit the spout part in the cage. Well within a day she pushed it out and managed to squeeze through the metal bars. I called the pet store and they had no suggestions. What do you think would best remedy this issue?

I use the mushroom water dispensers myself. Thankfully none of my hamsters have knocked them over, but they do tend to fill the base with shavings.

If the normal water bottles that hang on the outside of the cage didn't work for you, maybe a water bottle that goes on the inside will. At Petsmart they have water bottle holders that are used mainly for aquariums, but will also work just fine in a regular cage.

If you were thinking of getting a your hamster a new cage, you could try one of the bin cages. I use them and they are excellent, not to mention fun to make. They are roomy and provide much more room for toys that will entertain your hamster, so maybe she won't feel inclined to knock over water dispensers or try to escape. A water bottle designed for aquariums will also work great in these.

Good luck, I hope it all works out for you.

Hamsters are always knocking thing over in their cages, best to just buy an outside hanging one and bend the bars a little to get through, or is there a way to tie the water dish to the side of the cage so it will not tip over?

That's a tough one because they are really creative little critters. I would buy a length of wire from hardware store and wrap wire around the cage wire, then loop around water bottle, then wrap to another cage wire--like a harness. Also use across the area where you had to bend the cage wires to fit the water bottle spout so she can't get out that way. Only other option I can think of is a different cage entirely.

Get a 10 gallon fish tank and a lid, there aren't any metal bars, and you can just hang the water bottle on the inside and the hamster will have a hard time getting rid of the bottle. Most pet stores won't have any idea of what to do

Whenever I had bottle issues with rodents I got creative with wire twist ties.

If you don't want visible attempts at a fix though, then empty the cage of rodent and litter, then use the sticky side velcro strips to attach the mushroom waterer to the bottom of the cage.

You can remove the waterer easy enough, but she can't knock it over.

You can use a small ceramic bowl to put in her cage to fill with water. Make sure the bowl is not too big, as sometimes small hamsters will drown themselves in large bowls. This is a simple solution, but you will have to check the bowl daily to make sure it is full. Hamsters also tend to put their bedding in the bowl. Do not use a plastic bowl, this is harmful to the hammie if he chews and eats it. Hope this helps, good luck.

You can get a water bottle designed to hang on the inside of the cage. They are labelled hanging or aquarium water bottles.

Petsmart has several hanging models, if you need to describe it to the pet store.

Here's the Super Pet® Universal Water Bottle

buy a bigger cage or a smaller bottle....if not then tie the bottle on tighter and place a piece of carboard to cover the bent part of the cage so she won't get out

Make a noose out of dental floss and hang her. You laugh but it works.
