Newer versions for java overwrites/replaces the olders updates with news ones. So in my opinion, its not a bg deal to delete old updates of java. Cheers!.

I usually delete old versions of Java before installing new versions, but it's ok to leave the old ones.

Be careful of installing/upgrading! Make sure you don't do an automatic install!!! It installs programs you may not want that have nothing to do with Java. All of a sudden you will have new menu bars or other programs starting you had no intention of installing!
