Diet - When the Meiji emperor took national power from the last shogun he issued an edicit declaring the country open to cultural exchange and growth throughout the world.The emerpor wanted a new constitutional government fitting for the new modern Japan. Japan modeled their new government on German and eastern European ideas, the name Diet comes from Germany (prussia) and was a name commonly used for a public assembly.

The Japanese parliament is called the Diet. It consists of the House of Representatives (480 members) and the House of Councillors (242 members). The members of the Diet are elected by the Japanese people.

it is called the Diet of Japan, or in japanse 国会, kokkai
国 means country, or state
会 means meeting or gathering
together they would translate as State Assembly or State Meeting.
