i was looking over past questions on smoking, and was wondering for all those who identified as smokers in pregnancy, how many a day did u honestly smoke? i smoked with my first but have since quit with this baby, and i am just curious and would like to compare for my own interest. i know i smoked about 15 a day. i know how bad this is, and my son is fine. being aware of the risks is why i quit this time around

Bottom line: If you are pregnant and you smoke you are choosing to put your "habit" before your baby's best interests. There are no medical benefits to you when you smoke. Its common sense it will only cause potential harm to your child. And lets say, your child is born looking and seeming totally normal. A lot about brain development/ behavior cant be seen initially at birth. When it comes to child development, cigarettes can affect it all not just the lungs. There was a research study conducted that showed women who smoked during pregnancy had kids diagnosed with ADHD at higher rates for example.

Basically start practicing being a good mother and sacrifice your habit for a while, or be another selfish parent out there not putting their kids first. Your choice! Whats sad is that you will not be the only one having to suffer the consequences of YOUR behavior.

Why do folks keep lecturing you? They should be congratulating you because you quit smoking for your second child!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! :)

I have never personally been pregnant..

My mum however did smoke while pregnant with my brother and then again while pregnant with me.

With my brother she said she smoked about a 20 - 25 cigarettes a day. With me she smoked about 15 cigarettes a day.

The strange thing is, I've had a LOT more health problems than my brother. One explaination despite the difference in amount could be that an 7 year distance in age -- the cigs in more present time (86 vs 79) had a lot more nasty chemicals in them than more distant past cigs. Another is genetics, I was more susceptible to the bad effects of the chemicals in utero and am also destined genetically (regardless of smoking habit) for worse health.

Anyway, I commend you soo much for stopping smoking. That's really great and it's really such an awesome achievement. And, good luck! :)

honestly, alot of people dont know their facts about the whole smoking while pregnant. it just really pisses me off. when you get to a certain stage of your pregnancy quitting smoking can actually hurt your baby more than help them! each and every doctor has their own opinion on it and thats why they tell their patients wether or not to quit. i see nothing wrong with it! sure there are risks but yet i have also seen what CAN happen if you quit! i have had patients that have 5-6 kids and smoked with all of them and none of the kids have anything wrong with them. i have also seen patients that have quit smoking because they got pregnant and miscarry because they have put too much stress on the baby from quitting. also, i'm pregnant with my second and i smoke about a pack a day with both and nothing is wrong with my babies! and for you people who say that the mothers are being selfish and dont care about their babies are full of sh*t! some doctors are so adiment about telling you how bad smoking is for you but yet the majority of them do it theirselves. you would be suprised how many DOCTORS actually smoke and believe me i know because of the simple fact that i AM one! i'm sorry this topic is a very sore subject for me because a lot of people don't know their facts!

I always considered myself a social, habitual smoker!! I often didn't enjoy it (unless I was drinking!) I had irregular periods and thought my chance of conception was never going to happen. I always said if I ever did get pregnant I would stop...
I eventually took a home pregnancy test and it was positive..I had my doubts so I waited and went to the drs for confirmation - we were positive!! We found out that on a thursday night - we were having visitors for the weekend - I said to my husband Sunday night and I will stop. That is what I did!! that was at 6 weeks we are now 38 weeks and I haven't touched a cigarette!! Bubby has given me the motivation!! I hope that when I give birth I will have kicked the habit for good!!

I haven't smoked at all but I was a heavy smoker before I got pregnant for me baby is number one, and stopping smoking was not even a question. My French friend smoked 10 per day and her child was born with severe lung problems and was in intensive care for months, he now suffers from chronic asthma, she cries all the time and blames herself for her sons suffering, she thought it was fine because she also smoked with her first child and nothing happened, it depends, you can be lucky and have a healthy child, but then if you are the unlucky one in the statistics that causes your child to be harmed because of your habit, it is something you will regret for the rest of your life. She now spends thousands of dollars per year on health care and medications for her sons lung problems so it wasn't worth it financially either.. Please don't smoke, I feel loads better for stopping, and my skin and hair including teach and nails are fabulous now, I look loads younger...
best of luck

I smoked while I was pregnant and the doctor said that I was fine if I kept it at or below 5 a day, which I did. I found out I was pregnant at 3 months and my doctor said stopping smoking would cause more stress on the baby than stopping.

You may not notice anything wrong with your son and he may seem fine to you. However, your son may seem fine at the moment but the effects will not be noticed until the time passes on. Years later, when time has passed by, it will be then when you will notice the difference in your son's health. As for this current pregnancy, after going through what you will be going through with your first son's health. Two health problems to worry about will be even more stressfull. You are going to have to deal or as i should say handle your first son's health concerns, do not add to this with a second health issue. Your first son will need your attention.
