It really depends on what you are aguing in an essay: use them as you need AND don't worry OR you may find you don't write as freely as you would, OR NOT depending on your disposition AND so on.

IN reference to coordinating conjunctions, it is And, but, or, nor, for, so, yet..."not" is not (observe the LACK of a double negative) a coordinating conjunction, if that is what you are even talking about. Perhaps you meant nor?
