Basic ingredients: Malt Extract (sugar), Hops, Water, Yeast.
Hardware: 5 gallon bucket with lid (home depot or lowes) drill a small hole on the lid. Flexible tubing that fits snug into the hole. a small container or bucket and tape. Iodine or Bleach (for sanitation)
Brief explanation: Dissolve Malt Extract into water, bring to a boil, add hops for the desired bitterness and aroma. Cool the solution (called "wort"), pitch the yeast, and close the container. Store the container in a dark cool place until fermentation is over. Siphon out the liquid, add some priming sugar, bottle, and store for another 7-10 days. Enjoy. (depending on the type of beer you're trying to make the amount and type of malt extract, hops, yeast and time of boil will be different)
Explanation:
The tubing is to allow the CO2 to escape while keeping oxygen from entering into the bucket. The small container is for holding the water and acting as a "s" trap similar to the one used under your sink. Tape just holds the tubing in position.
You can go crazy with other equipment also, such as turkey fryer, cooling coil, cornelius keg, as you get better at brewing. Later stages are partial grain, and then professional brewers are always full grain.
