a U(a=238,z=92) originally at rest decays spontaneously to form thorium and an alpha particle.no gamma rays is emitted
(a):the alpha particle emitted during decay travels a distance of 25mm in a cloud chamber.given that on average alpha particle creates 4 *raise to power 3 ions per mm of track in cloud chamberand energy required to poduce one ion pair is 4.8*raise to power -18 j.find kinetic energy with which alpha particle was emitted.
(b):hence deduce the initial velocities of alpha particle and thorium nucleus
c:calculate the difference between the rest masses of original uranium nucleus and sum of product of rest masses of products of decay
plz solve them for me
answers:
a:4.8*raise to power -13j
b:velocity of alpha:1.20*raise to power 7 m/s
velocity of thorium :2.05*raise to power 5 m/s
c:mass:5.42* raise to power -30 kg
plz post the complete process h did u solve this question

I think this is the correct way to solve the problem

In this problem it appears you mean 10 raised to the power instead of raised to the power.
(e.g. 4^3 = 64 but 4*10^3 = 4000)

(a) kinetic energy = number of ion pairs * energy per pair
= (25*(4*10^3)/2) * 4.8*10^(-18)
= 2.4 *10^(-13) J
(your answer misses the fact that those are the energies required per pair of ions (divide by 2))

(b) the alpha particle has an atomic mass of 4 so the thorium must have an atomic mass of 234
m(alpha) = (4/1000)/6*10^23 = 6.666 *10^-27 Kg
m(Thorium) = (234/1000)/6*10^23 = 3.9 *10^-25 Kg

find the alpha particles velocity using
kinetic energy = (1/ 2)mv^2
giving velocity = 8.49 *10^6 m/s

find the thoriums velocity by knowing that it will have the same momentum as the alpha particle
m(alpha)*v(alpha) = m(thorium) *v(thorium)
giving velocity = 1.45 *10^5 m/s

(c) Now we add together the kinetic energies of the two particles
KE(alpha)=2.4*10^-13
KE(thorium) = 4.1*10*-15 (using KE=(1/2)mv^2)

then use E=mc^2 to get the amount of mass which has been converted to energy (c=3*10^8, the speed of light)
giving mass difference = 2.71*10^-30Kg

For the 1st area, locate out what share a million/2 lives befell throughout the 40 two days. In different words, what share cases do you divide 2 gms via 2 to get .25. For the 2nd area, alpha decay is whilst an alpha particle (a 4/2 He atom) splits off from the preliminary atom. Beta decay is a similar basically with a beta particle, it incredibly is a nil/-a million electron. basically positioned those on the products ingredient and make the a lot and expenses equivalent on the two aspects and locate the hot ingredient on the product ingredient. in case you prefer to get fairly technical, you could upload the chargeless, massless muon to the products ingredient to stability out the atomic spin.
