Serenissima by Bob James from the Restless album. The instrumental repeats little bits of a common thread throughout the song. The same phrases here and there, little "spurts" at a time until the end when the entire thread comes together as a grand celebration. If you listen to the song it just grabs you as you follow along. Then you realize what he's doing and you grow eager to hear it all. And then he answers... It's amazing.

Second favorite is anything on Anjani Thomas' Blue Alert album. Whoo, that girl can sign. She just reaches out and touches your soul. And she'll answer email :-)

But Musicman's answer is right in there too. I still remember cruising in my '69 Charger listening to Samba Pa Ti on my Muntz 8-track tape deck. Ahhhhh, so many songs, so little time!
