for now avoid Vista like the plague until version 2 comes out
Microsoft's history with first releases from 95 up have all been disasters til the next version came out.Vista makes to many promises as an operating system plus forces Internet explorer 7 on you not to mention the security or lack of it.they MS borrowed from a major vendor to get the basic anti virus and firewall much like they did with the diskeeper people that let them have only the very basic most resource hog defragmenter
out there...short answer is wait or just go XP professional
yes it is a marketing ploy no doubt about it however it is also the way things are going to be one day when all the bugs are worked out. NO Vista here

Started way back in the 1980's. There were several operating systems. Microsoft won the battle. As the science developed, new ideas and means came along and a new system or version released. And now the newest version in Microsoft line is Vista. If you don't need it, leave it on the shelf. Nobody is forcing you to buy it. There are various version of Linux around and other open source OS's. Use them. But just because you have feelings that Microsoft is trying to sell their "crap", keep it in your pocket. Tell why it is "crap" and not just shine about it. Or go and get something else.

Grow up.

As with any new version of Windows, there will be new perks with the OS. More support, etc. Also, if you have ever noticed, once a new OS comes out, some programs require that new version to work.

Personally, I wait until about a year before upgrading to a new version of Windows. By then they work out a lot of the bugs with service packs, and the price goes down a lot.

DRM to force feed you copyright lobbyist agendas,
Security so secure the back door into your system is hidden (it will take a year for the kids to find),
So bloated that you will need 10GB plus to install your basic OS.
It has a rip off of ACDSee graphics products,
You will need a high end gaming class system to run in plain desktop mode.
Signed driver support will require pricey vendors.

It only looks good, but suffers the same problems early OSX betas had.

Stick with XP for now -- its still beta

Yes. But we do not need to be held in bondage by Microsoft. Set yourself free - get UBUNTU. Once you have it installed you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community.

Software freedom day is coming. A chance to enlighten your friends and anybody else who will listen.
