some info for americans on david beckam, a superstar
David Robert Joseph Beckham, OBE (born 2 May 1975) is an English professional footballer who currently plays for Real Madrid. Beckham was named as a member of Pelé's FIFA 100.[3] In addition to his success on the pitch, Beckham has been recognized by Time magazine as one of 2004's Time 100 (Heroes & Icons),[4] as well as an elite global advertising brand.[5]
Beckham is the fifth most capped English player of all time, has twice been the runner up in the FIFA World Player Of The Year Award in 1999 and 2001 and in addition to being the only Englishman to score in three different World Cups, is also only the ninth player in World Cup history to score twice from direct free kicks. He was captain of the English national team from 15 November 2000 to 2 July 2006.
Beckham's career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his first first-team appearance in 1992, at the age of 17. While with Manchester United he played a key role in their dominance of the FA Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s, being pivotal in accomplishing The Treble of the League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 1999. He left the club to become only the third Englishman to sign for Real Madrid in 2003, after Laurie Cunningham and Steve McManaman.
In 2006, after England's quarter-final exit at the World Cup in Germany, he stood down as captain and he was then succeeded by Chelsea captain John Terry. Beckham was dropped from the England national team selected by coach Steve McClaren on 11 August 2006.
On 10 January 2007 Real Madrid Sporting Director Predrag Mijatovic announced Beckham would leave the club in mid 2007. On 11 January 2007, Beckham agreed to a move to the Major League Soccer (MLS) team Los Angeles Galaxy on a five year contract beginning on 1 July 2007, after his current deal with Real Madrid expires.[6] Late Monday (15 January), after speculation in the UK and Spanish press on a possible early exit for Beckham from Real Madrid, MLS Commissioner Don Garber denied that his league was attempting to secure an early MLS debut for Beckham.[7]

Sure, many people know who he is. The money he is making isn't just for playing the game. If it was, he would be woefully overpaid. He will hopefully create more and more soccer fans and make America take soccer (football) more seriously. He is probably the biggest name to play soccer in the States since Pele played for the New York Cosmos a couple decades ago.

To answer your questions:
1. I've never met him personally so I don't know. He's probably a nice enough person.
2. Yes
Honestly, he'll have his American "15 minutes of fame" and then go off into the sunset.
I do have to say that the amount of money that he's getting(and some other sport stars) is pretty disgraceful when there are so many people who can't get the basic neccesities of life.

Half a million pounds? Dude we don't have a clue what that converts to for the most part. We talk in terms of Dollars and actually in general don't pay much attention to the conversions. I know the name and know he is a Soccer player. Used to be one of the top ones in/for England. Do I care? Do I like him? Honestly I have no opinion of him. Other then that he is old and England didn't see that intrested in him anymore. I keep up with sports in general and my understanding is he is/has slowing/slowed down. So he comes to America to try to help promote the Major League Soccer league thinking Americans will care about him and start watching. Well actually I think he came over because the price was right, but they brought him over to get some attention. Is Pele still alive, maybe we could get him to buy a team and try to promote the league like that? After all even Americans tend to recognize that name. His coming here is a joke to me. It makes the league more of a joke if you ask me. Hey more power to him though to see that money and say hey I'll take it.

the salary isn't for his on field ability. it's for his name recognition and an attempt by MLS to legitimize itself in the eyes of the global community.
Clearly the salary is excessive for the amount of talent but, if he can put more folks in the stands, sell a few more jerseys, and otherwise promote the league (thus increasing revenue) it may well be worth the investment.
I'm just hoping that if these amounts of cash are going to be tossed around they start to get thrown in the directions of guys like couch, ronaldino, riquelme, etc. Seems to me there's no better way to legitimize the league than to bring in the upper tier talent. And clearly, the owners aren't afraid to pay for it.

Ouch. Thanks for your vote of confidence in our sporting knowledge, and knowledge of current events in general.
Of course we know who David Beckham is. We're American, not stupid. (That was a slow one right up the middle, so I'm expecting some good comebacks.)
He seems to be the Anna Kournikova of soccer -- though admittedly he's way more talented than she ever was -- in that he is noted more as a good looking, fashionable paparazzi hound and celebrity than an athlete. I've also heard rumors that his game has been off as of late, which may have spurred the move across the pond.
