Earth may be as much as 70 million years old. Then, certain evidence was brought to light indicating that evolution was not possible in so short a time. So, the age of the Earth was pushed back. During the 20th century, it was thought that the age of the Earth was as much as 1 billion years old. Now, with the development of radiometric dating and the application of that technique on the meteorite "Allende", it is thought that the world is up to 4.6 billion years old! i know its really really old!

The evidence is very strong now for an age of about 4.6 billion years. Almost all scientists now agree.
Richard Dawkins points out that if some creationists think the world is only 6000 years old, that is like thinking the distance from New York to Los Angeles is only 17 feet.

we've had this one before and there are many different answers ....my astronomy encyclopaedia says 6000 billion years ago the earth was formed.
