'Left wing' and 'Right wing' started in the French Estates General (i.e. Parliament) at the time of the Revolution.

The conservatives sat on the right, the more revolutionary deputies sat on the left.

The divisions in most modern parliaments are much the same.

Today 'left wing' means a socialist while 'right wing' means a conservative.

Very basically...
Socialists believe the state has a responsibility to intervene and provide housing, healthcare, welfare and other essential services, funded by taxes which increase according to wealth. They also believe that essential industries (coal, steel, railways etc.) should be owned by the state. Traditonally socialist parties are mainly supported by the working class. The most extreme form of socialism is a communist state where just about everything is state controlled.

Conservatives believe in lower taxes, less state intervention and an economy based more on private enterprise. Most support for conservative parties comes from the middle and upper classes.

However it is possible to get working-class conservatives and middle- and even upper-class socialists.

Comparisons are not helped by the abuse that people on both sides fling at each other.

In Europe most countries have an economy based partly on state ownership and partly on private enterprise and the parties differ mainly over the balance between the two.

Left wing believes the government should take care of every body except the productive people. And the productive people, should take care of the poor, lazy, losers. The left love big strong government to strong arm the working people by taking all the money they can from them(taxes).
Right believe in studying and working hard and some day their chance will come. They believe they can take care of themselves and resent the government calling themselves 'partners' in their businesses which justifies them robbing the workers money. The right believe we need a strong military to defend our country instead of feeding the non-productive parasites on 'welfare'.
Many young people want to give a lot of money to the poor until they work for a while and try to raise their families. Then they realize the extent of the welfare cancer within our society. Then they become Right wingers.
The left wingers were pinko com/symps in the 60's and now are enviros. They despise the freedoms of the western democracies thru the Bill of Rights and are bent on destroying that in every way possible, especially private property rights. Big Hollywood money supports the leftists.
The right wingers honor our forefathers and the military and the men who fought for our countries freedoms.
The left wingers are parasitic in using our countries benefits, but refuse to fight for the countries best interests.
Take note of the terrorists using the anti-war positions of the leftists to wage psychological war against us.
The Right says "If the government was in charge of the Sahara desert, in 5 years there would be no sand".
The Right generally believe their is a God or at least some powerful being. The left generally don't. The left believe same sex marriage constitutes a healthy 'family'. The left resents corporations profits. They think corporations should be taxed higher. The Right understand that taxing corporations means higher prices on the goods the manufacturers produce. Hard to find a middle ground here. Hope this helps a little.

i am going to do it extremely straight forward. Like extremely straight forward. The time period comes from the French authorities, the position the peasants who wanted equality sat on the left, and what you would call the better type on the right. far far left wing. Communism. (do not get this blended up with Stalinism, all it skill is the ending of inner most belongings) Left wing. Socialism so as meaning the authorities controls the commercial gadget. accurate wing. it really is once you've an open market, so the authorities doesn't administration the agencies, operating example if Tesco with out caution wanting to purchase out Asda and Morrisons etc. the authorities would quit it, to verify a monopoly doesn't take position. yet contained in the a accurate wing society this does no longer ensue. With such issues as guidelines you get onto the Authoritarian/Libertarian scale, so like extra guidelines = Authoritarian. a lot less guidelines = liberatarian.

To me,it seems the fundamental 'feel' of the ideas are this

Left "Why should you have a better life than me, we should live evenly"

Right " I worked hard and made a sucsess out of myself, thats why im rich, If you do not try in life and slack off i will not support you, until you pull your own weight."

Thats what i think anyways,

Geesh, give the girl a break from the culture war!

The "Left" (Democrats, et al) generally believe that the government, via laws and social programs, can do the most good for it's citizens.

The "Right" (Republicans/Conservatives, et al) generally believes that less government, via less laws, less restrictions, and less taxes, provide an unfettered free market, which makes for more successful businesses, more jobs, and higher wages.

There are also social issues, such as gay rights, gay marriage, abortion, etc. But, effectually, the "Left" and the "Right" believe in vastly different economic theory.

Now, my slant (I'm sorry!): The vast majority of Economists describe themselves as "Conservatives". Therefore, those who understand economic theory the best say the "Right" is, well, right!

I'll let others tackle the social debates.
