Pat or rub the babys back while your sitting the baby up on your lap holding him with one hand on his chest and the other patting the back. Thats the best way I figured to do it. Good luck!

I have had 4 children and they were all a bit different. Here are some methods I would try when the regular over the shoulder wasn't doing the trick.

Sit him on your lap. Make sure he is sturdy with your left hand (presuming you are right handed, if not just switch it around). You can try the regular patting OR rub his back in a circular motion. Try to keep his chest as straight as possible. If bent over too much he might spit it up instead.

You can also rub in circles while he is up on your shoulder. I don't know if you tried that. I always preferred walking over sitting. For some reason that worked better.

Also try on his belly. Lay him on a bed, blankie on the floor, or even couch cushion. Make sure the hands arent under and the head is sideways. Then you can gently rub his back. It's worth trying.

And sometimes they just haven't had enough to burp! My youngest needed to be burped less often than the others when they were infants. If this is a reoccuring issue the solution might just be to wait a little longer.

This can be a frustrating time i know!!! I have just had a baby myself 2weeks ago and have 2 other children also, there is no "best" way to burp but there is so many ways u can try... the easiest way i found is sitting on your lap using the "pistol grip" (index finger and thumb across the jaw line) and rubbing the back in a circular motion for about 1 min and then patting from just above the bottom all the way up to the top of the back (small and fast taps),another good and effective way is to lay him on his stomach in your arm as you would hold a football, supporting his head in your hand and patting and\or rubbing his back, other than that you can always try about 30mls of boiled water as this is "suppose" to be pretty good but i can't really recommend as i have never tried this.
Goodluck to you and your bubs and HAPPY BURPING

Some babies just don't need to burp as much as others. If he's not uncomfortable then don't worry about it. If he is, then try sitting him on your knee and jiggle your knee rapidly but gently. Then a few times take him and lay him down and sit him up again quickly....sounds weird but my nurse in the hospital showed it to me and it was the only way my son would burp....but he didn't burp every single feeding.

The trick is in the hand. Your hand should be cupped as if you were having something poured into it. To make sure you're hand is properly positioned your thumb should be positioned on the pointer finger in the middle of the space where the knuckle and the tip of pointer finger bends. Firmly pat the babies back. Not hard but firmly. Good Luck. If that does not work the child may not have to belch.

Place the baby gently over over your shoulder where their chin is just slightly above it.

Hold the baby there with one arm. With your free open hand use a slight amount of pressure. Repeatedly move your hand from the base of the baby's spine slowly up to the back of their neck. No tapping.

My very first job was actually in a nursery and that's one of the few things I remember that always worked. :)

You should lean him against your upper chest over your shoulder where his belly is slightly resting against you. Then you can slightly bounce him or give him soft pats on his back while walking around. A little bit of movement helps to gently move his tummy around and get a nice burp out of him so he won't get cramps later.

AFter seven babies, my husband and I don't even bother doing anything but the following: sit the baby on your lap, put your hand on their tummy, and bend the baby forward till it's almost touching it's toes with it's nose. YOu support the head by resting the chin on your fingers of the hand that's on the tummy. Then smack the back wtih the other hand--not wimpy taps but good hard thumps. Works every time.

Hiya - not all babies burp - my daughter hardly ever does and when she does she was lying down on her side- LOL! I that breastfed bubs burp less due to not have a problem with air bubbles that bottle fed babies can have.. not sure though.
