I'm knitting squares to create a blanket. Does it matter if you use different types of yarn? I have a lot leftover from other projects and don't really want to spend the money to get more for this. Will it make the blanket look or feel weird? Thank you!

If the yarn types are really different, you may have problems. For example, if you have a superwash wool square and squares of linen, will not have any stretch but the superwash wool square will, depending on the stitch pattern. If you handwash the blanket, some squares may relax and stretch, some may shrink, and some may stay the same.

I'd suggest using different yarns that have similar characteristics--stretch, drape, reaction to washing, etc..

If you're talking about different fiber content, animal fiber, acryllic, cotton/plant fiber, then you are talking about different kinds of care needed and it is best not to mix them in a single afghan. It is best to use like fibers together in this case.

If you are talking about different diameters (grist or in the US weights) of yarn, as long as the basic fiber content is the same you can mix squares of of baby weight with squares of chunky weight or any range in between as long as you have similar sizes of squares. What you really want to aim for is yarn combinations that can be cared for in the same manner.

I'm no expert, but as long as all your yawn is about the same width, I'd imagine there wouldn't be a problem. Now, if you are using plain yarns (such as a sokid color three-ply acrylic) with specialty yarns (multi-color, wooly, thick yarn), it might start looking a little funky.

It is all about the washing. You will want to use yarn that has similar washing instructions.
