Try the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter, they take much better care of the animals than the regular pound, so the dogs are usually clean, healthy and happy. I think they also screen both dog and owner for suitability. All in all a great facility.

Look through the local news paper and buy from a breeder...Never from a petshop as all of theirs dogs come from puppy mills, therefore you never know if its a true breed...Buying from a breeder is best because you get to see the parents of the puppy, and the people are knowledgable and can give you good information on care...You can find nice dogs at the pound too...They need a chance for a good home. Good luck..

Shelter is the best place. Save a life and go adopt over there.

They also have dog and cat adoption at Pets Mart and Petco.

If you want to go cheap though, try looking at the penny saver for your area. They usually have dogs from $10 to $500.
