I am curious to understand how there are so many people in this country who don't have a CLUE about US foreign policy, what it is, how much it truly costs, how we are lied to about it, etc. I believe this ignorance is purposeful: When I was in highschool I was taught NOTHING about U.S. imperialism and it was alive and well waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back then, too.

This question is a valid question, but it's not an open door to trash high school students.

I'm 19... I graduated a year and a half ago. I was an honor student, so I think I had different teachers and classes from most of others. I was taught much about foreign policy-- the stuff we've done in Latin America, the Middle East, etc. But you have to realize it has to do more with the individual students' initiative to learn about what's going on. The textbooks are there, I know that where I live, it's mandatory to learn World History, which gives exposure to US imperialism.

It's irresponsible to blame everything on the 'dumb, ignorant high school student who never studies.' It's such a stereotype.

And I'm a Political Science major now, and it's due largely to what I did learn about history.

well right now... i'm taking u.s. history and we learned about past foreign policies... imperialism during the 1880's ... isolationism right after world war I... and we talked about how we're imperialistic sometimes and the policeman of the world and yet how the United States handles situations differently. Pretty much we've only talked about the past..not the present yet.

Yeah.....we should worry about their spelling and puctuation before we worry about any of that stuff. Have you seen some of the writing on here? I think it would be a little hard for them to understand the big picture even in highschool. Not that it applies to all of them, but they need to gradually work their way up to that stuff. Think about it, most of them don't even have to support themselves. They live at home, have a car mom and dad bought them...etc. They may not understand/appreciate the finer aspect of foreign policy until they understand what it really means to "make it on your own."

thje reason you never heard anything about US foreign policy in high school is because you never made it that far with your 6th grade education. Maybe if countries such as Canada or France decided to help defend the free world the US would not have to shoulder the cost of protecting the world. Our economy beats their econony hands down even though we have to pay a disproportionate amount on defense not only to protect ourselves but every other so called free country too.

We learned about foreign policy in my government class. My teacher was great, and I actually became really interested in poli sci because of that class. Might be my major next fall, who knows?

Most high school students are in public school. They aren't being taught much of anything!! The quality of education in the US has slipped significantly in the last 20 years.
