I am a Red Wings fan but I'd have to say Tomas Holmstrom is the toughest guy in the NHL, cause he's like the only player in the NHL who screens goalies all game long and takes all the hits in front of the net like 100 times per game, and still gets up after every hit and keeps on gettin in front of the net like an aggressive hard working player and takes pain time after time and never goes on the IR, so he'd have to be my pick as toughest NHL player of today

How about one of the new Pittsburgh Penguins, George Larocque? I don't know if he's really the toughest, but since his is an enforcer, it gives me the chance to ask this question...Can we now hang a banner at the Mellon Arena that says "Can You Smell What Larocque Is Cookin'?"
As for the list of retired tough guys, that takes me back to a some of the most fun memories I had growing up a Pens' fan....the great heavyweight bouts of the 70's between Bob "Battleship" Kelly and Dave Schultz.

They are all retired! There are no tough players in the NHL anymore! Let me name a few, and let's see if any of the NHL players now can compare.
1. Tiger Williams
2. Gordie Howe
3. Bob Probert
4. Stu Grimson
5. Marty McSorley
6. Tie Domi
7. Ken Daneyko
8. Kevin Stevens
There's more but I don't think I have to go any further!

Okay, no one will bring up this guy since he has not been playing since a injury but Brenden Morrow. An average sized guy who will go into any corner or board against anyone for a loose puck. He's the only guy I have seen succesfully (except Forsberg, who perfected this) push the puck (and controlling it) while he is pushing big defenders like they are kids in close physical contact.

It has to be Darcy Tucker from the Toronto Maple Leafs, he can hand out checks, and he can take them with no problem either.
