If they are carpenter ants, call a pro. Carpenter ants can do as much damage to your home as termites. They could be nesting just about anywhere. You won't find a mound in the yard. They live in wall cavities, tree hollows, rotten branches or tree stumps. Usually, the nest will be near a water source. They will travel up to 100 yards in search of food, so it's possible they are coming from the neighbors. To ge rid of them, the nest has to be located and treated, or if you're lucky, they will accept some bait and take it home. I worked as an exterminator for 6 years and had very limited luck with baits for carpenter ants.

If they're actually carpenter ants then they're only living in your house. Carpenter ants make their colonies in dead wood and only eat other insects. Find out where the main colony is (it's probably outside around a dead stump or some logs) and sprinkle ant bait around. They'll take it into the nest and after a couple of months the colony will die.

They are nothing to fool around with, go to the nursery or hardware store that carries chemicals and try using something that lists them specifially. Or better yet get a professional. If you are renting call the landlord, I would definitely want to know before the house turned to dust. Good Luck!

I got a big bottle of orange oil cleaner concentrate, mixed it strong than the directions stated - and poured it on the mounds.
They never came back. Read about it in the tightwad gazette.
Good Luck

Try Terro a liquid ant killer that was recommended to me. I used it once a couple years ago and never saw an ant again.
You can find Terro at Wal-Mart.

Those guys are tough. You have to find the main hall and kill the queen.
P.S. The queen is the size of a man's thumb.
