Public transportation is available, but generally, the closer you are to businesses, the more accessible public transportation will be. You can visit the Zoo. This place is awesome! You've got a lot of photo ops here. You can also get your share of exercise by walking all over the place. Of course, if you get tired, there's always a tram that travels around the zoo. Downtown is a good place to hang out. You have the mall, close proximity to the zoo, great places to eat. Just a place to relax and sight-see. They have the Hornblower that takes you around the bay on a tour. If you want, they have dinner cruises. The Wild Animal Park is about 20 minutes away (north) of San Diego, but well worth the visit. This should be a day trip because by the time you're done, you'll be tired. It's like the zoo, but waaaay more animals. They even offer "safari" trips where you go to the animals and feed them by hand. I'm talking about rhinos, giraffes, etc. It's a memorable experience. The zoo and Animal Park are certainly not just for children. 3 days are not enough to explore this wonderful city. We got there every year for a week. This year, we want to go kayaking through sea caves. Oh, yeah.. there's a place called Old Town where you'll find some of the most unique shops. It's right on the water, so walking around is very relaxing. Hope this helps. Have fun!

Public Transportation for SD is called MTS [Metropolitan Transit System]. Their services include The Trolley, Buses, and also private transportation. You can buy a 3-day pass for 15 dollars at a trolley station. [If you're coming in from the airport, ask a worker where the trolley station is. It isn't too far, but you can take a bus to it.]
DO NOT BE WITHOUT YOUR MTS PASS. If you don't have it, you may be ordered for a court citing.
For attractions, you can go to the San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Japanese Friendship Garden, Sea World, and Old Town SD. The Zoo, Animal Park, Japanese friendship garden, and other similar attractions are all in Balboa Park. You might want to spend one day over there, Sea World and good beaches, can be found right along Pacific Beach. Old Town can be reached by using the trolley. If you don't know how to use the Trolley [It will seem a little complicated at first], there should be a security guard nearby in each of the stations.
Be safe, and obey the laws. =)

No, public transportation is almost non-existant. Buses generally run once per half hour; a few higher traffic areas (like downtown) are every 15 minutes. Balboa Park is nice--many museums, but also just a nice place to wander around. Torrey Pines State Park is good if you like nature--Torrey Pines are only found there and one other place in the world. I'd skip Sea World, Seaport Village, and Horton Plaza. If you do like animals, and can get there, the Wild Animal Park is unusual, in that the animals are essentially allowed to run free on much more land than a typical zoo. But even by car it's 45 minutes from downtown--I would see if your hotel can arrange some form of shuttle service.
Lastly, I would recommend eating cheap Mexican food. Mexican food in San Diego is different (and better) than anywhere else (except L.A. & T.J.). Not a sit down restaurant--there should be paper plates, fresh made hot sauce, and grease o'plenty.
