* Current research says that occasional use of alcohol (1-2 drinks) is not harmful to the nursing baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.”
* Many experts recommend against drinking more than 1-2 drinks per week.
* It is recommended that nursing moms avoid breastfeeding during and for 2-3 hours after drinking (Hale 2002).
* There is no need to pump & dump milk after drinking alcohol, other than for mom's comfort -- pumping & dumping does not speed the elimination of alcohol from the milk.
* Alcohol does not increase milk production, and has been shown to inhibit let-down and decrease milk production (see below).
* If you're away from your baby, try to pump as often as baby usually nurses (this is to maintain milk supply, not because of the alcohol). At the very least, pump or hand express whenever you feel uncomfortably full - this will help you to avoid plugged ducts and mastitis.
If in doubt, talk to your doctor or your child's pediatrician. Hope that helps. Best wishes and take care.

How old is your baby? The booze will get into your milk, but one glass is okay. I started having 1 bottle of Guiness beer (only 4% alcohol) when my baby was a few weeks old (to help boost my milk suppply--the old English way!). Now he's 6 months and I will have a small glass of wine from time to time. Tonight I had 3/4 bottle of beer (he's already nursed and is asleep--probably won't nurse again for 2 hours). Do a search first if it helps you feel better about it--get a more medical opinion!

If you're going to have a glass, that's fine-a whole bottle is not. Concentration peaks at 30-60 minutes after consumption (60-90 if consumed with food) and 2-3 hours to clear the system.

Only a tiny amount of alcohol you're drinking gets into the breastmilk, so a good rule of thumb is, if you're good to drive, you're good to feed. One glass shouldn't hurt. Even two glasses probably won't. On a personal note, though: I drank wine while breastfeeding, and while it was usually fine and my daughter is doing fine (great, even), there was a certain brand of wine that seemed to upset her stomach. Even if I waited several hours and was cold sober, it upset her stomach. I guess it was something with that particular vineyard. Just watch how your baby reacts. If it seems to make her sick, stop doing it.

I know there is a lot of contradicting stuff about alcohol of any kind and nursing, I say if there is a doubt, just don't do it.

I'm pretty sure that if you feed your baby then have a drink, by the tiem you feed again it should be out of your system.
