Vista upgrade advisor tells me I need more RAM for upgrade. Too many choices. Need advice.

Yes, Vista by itslef needs a minimum of 512 Mb RAM, and Aero recommends an ideal 1Gb RAM

Which System do you have and what are your current RAM specs?

If you are only going to add another DIMM do your MOBO, then it should be the same as what you have (as in DDR / DDR2, the same speed maybe 400, 533 MHz, the number of pins and even the latency)

Else you can replace it - Transcend, Corsair, Kinsgton are good brands. They will cost you around 100 bucks for 1 Gb.

Tigetdirect and newegg are good places to search. you may get some good deals on amazon as well.

512mb of memory minimum required to run Vista. Find out what model your laptop is and see how much memory can be added to it. www.newegg.com is a good site for these and doesnt cost as much as most places.
