They agreed to declare war on Japan 3 months after Germany surrendered, and launched their invasion of Manchuria on August 8. The Japanese had about 750,000 men in Manchuria at the time. In two weeks, the Japanese suffered over 80,000 killed and about 600,000 wounded or captured, while the Russians suffered just over 8,000 killed themselves. While the campaign was virtually ignored in the US histories, which sought to make the atomic bombs appear as the sole reason for Japan's surrender, the campaign was widely studied among NATO military planners as an example of just what the Red Army was capable of.

The atomic bomb was dropped on Japan to force them to surrender, to keep the Soviet Union from gaining a foothold in the far east. The atomic bomb was NOT dropped to save American soldiers lives, but as a political tool.
