Losing wallpaper and screensavers, loading only programs used daily in startup, running Disk Cleanup, Scandisk and defrag regularly, etc. will help to free up memory.

Re: loud noise - that you'd better checked out. Something must be loose.

ONCE I SAW AN OPTION TO ALLOW SEARCH TO WORK IN THE BACKGROUND. IT SAID IT WOULD MAKE MY FUTURE SEARCHES FASTER.
LAST NIGHT I WANTED TO WATCH A DVD. System resources were 100%. Movie hezitated every 3 seconds... then i went to the 3-finger salute and right clicked DVD stuff to give it highest priority ... my mouse and stuff stopped responding but the movie was great. I hope people find this. I was trying for 2 weeks - decoder - codec - driver ... audio started eating ram when i upgraded to Windows 2000.

Of course theres a solution. Open the case see if any cables or wires are touching any of the fans. Next make sure your powersupply fan is working along with the fan on your CPU.
When you open the case you can trace the origin of the noise then decide what to do next.
