I just started taking birth control about a week ago and I wanted to make sure before I have any sexual relations, when it is fully effective? Some people told me after 3 months and some told me after 3 weeks. And what are the chances of getting pregnant after the first week? After the first month?

I was told by my Ob-Gyn that it really only takes a few days to kick-in (it's either in your system or not), but that docs always tell you to wait a month just to be safe... in other words, better safe than sorry.

To be safe it is best to wait a month. Birth control works in three ways: by preventing the uterine walls from building up to make a hospitable environment for implantation, by preventing ovulation and by changing the cervical mucous all of which work together to make the pill as effective as it is. Your body needs time to allow the hormones to adjust to the pill and allow it to do what it does. Usually a week is OK, but keep in mind that if you have sex after one week of birth control, if you started at the end of your period that would be around the time you would normally ovulate meaning that if your body hasn't adjusted to the hormones yet, you could ovulate and be having sex at your most fertile time...is it worth it to risk it? Make sure you take the pill at the same time every day, especially if you are on a low dose pill, to make sure the pill is as effective as it can be. Remember, you may have side effects but they will usually go away within 3 months, if not, you should switch pills. Good luck, and remember if you decide not to use back-up protection, you are running the risk of getting pregnant, however unlikely it may be, if you aren't prepared to deal with the consequences it is always best to be safe.

Birth control is NEVER 100% effective. It takes anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks for it to work, everyone's body is different. Plus it does nothing to prevent STDS, HIV or HPV...HPV can be spread with or without an outbreak and even condoms won't keep you from getting it as it is spread by skin to skin contact. If you NEVER want to take the chance of getting pregnant Use a condom

First I need to vent. Why can't people offer real answers and advise instead of being total idiots!! It is so rude and frustrating!

Secondly, here is some information that I hope will be helpful to you.
It is going to depend on which method of birth control you are using. Typically with the pill protection begins after your first full month of pills. Check out this website for more detailed information.

Hope that helps. Take care and best wishes.

The longer you've been taking it the better your chances are of it being effective. I would say at least 3 weeks would be best.. at one week you will still need to use another form of protection just to be on the safe side! Take care, good luck and have fun! ;)

my doctor told me a month and it should be effective. but i would still wear rubbers for a month or two just to be sure you gave it enough time to kick in. babys are alot of work. condoms are not. lol!

Use a backup method (condoms) for the first month.
