i need to run a specific application for work...which is compatible with xp pro...and may not be compatible with xp media

Windows Media Center Edition is XP Pro basically. The Product ID numbers are different from version to version, but the OS is the same, just different features.

i dont see why not. xp media center compares to xp pro is just a matter of a few tools here and there in difference.
