I feel that tragedy bonds people. We often forget how important our fellow human beings are until we feel weak and vulnerable. We need other people to support us. There is strength in numbers.
It's similar to how sometimes we forget to pray to a higher being when life is good, but as soon as something bad happens, we send up prayers asking for help. Perhaps it's the same with people...we forget how much we need them until something bad happens.
