Or it can be nothing (just word that match with the tone).

A man- who is care free- who seems to floating along enjoying lifes simplicity worry free-not aware of the fact that the life around him is not so simple-finds her-and maybe with him-she can find that same blissfullness. Who knows-its Fiona Apple.

It means that he is merely dabbling in thoughts of her that could could become very deep & emotional thoughts if he allowed them to, but doesn't because her touch reaps what misfortune sows.

I love that song! To me, she's talking about a man she cares about deeply, who doesn't realize just how important he is to her....though he stays with her because on some level he knows that she will take great care of him. She will 'reap' anything misfortune may bring.

I think the lyrics mean...
He goes along pretending like there's nothing wrong just as she makes it seem, but he doesn't know that what's inside of her is more than she can give, and she knows that she can't have him holding on so tightly that eventually...it'll all have to end.

I think it's talking about the innocence of children or someone. Like.. just floating and unaware of how deep the water is under you.. its like.. all you see is good, and you are unafraid because you do not know. that's just what I think.
