If we park our car facing out, rather than pulling straight in, they will tow our car. Is that legal?

Your apartment complex can enforce any sort of parking rules they choose (within reason) as long as you are notified in advance of any enforcement.

The reasons why the made this rule are simple:

1) Idiot drivers do not know how to park.
2) Trying to stay between the lines is a lot harder when backing into a space.
3) Lack of parking spaces means everybody has to fit between the lines.
4) To many accidents result when people try to back into spaces.

It is their property, they can choose to restrict parking as they see fit. However, if it makes you feel better; consult your lease. See if they have authority to tow cars.

If they sent written notification yes...although you can always say you didn't receive notification, and then they have to prove you DID, which they can't. If they have posted signs in the parking area, it's completely legal.

Why would backing into a parking spot be grounds for towing?!!!

Reason they do this is because when people back in, the car will usually block a sidewalk or ? I have been a professional driver for several years, and have taken many safe driving courses. In almost all of them, they have stated that it is much safer to back in. In fact, if we didn't back in, we would get written up for unsafe.
